Benson High Evacuated After ‘Chemical Spill’
Portland, Ore. – Benson High School was evacuated Tuesday morning after what authorities described as a chemical spill. Portland Fire & Rescue responded to a hazmat incident at the Northeast Portland school at about 8:30 a.m. At least one person was transported to the hospital.
Superintendent Dr. Kimberlee Armstrong released a statement saying, “The spill has been contained. At least one student is receiving medical attention.” Parents were instructed to pick up their children or provide permission to release them. The school closed for the rest of the day.
Students describe a sulfur-like odor, and say they were told to evacuate shortly after classes began.
