Hillsboro City Council Unanimously Passes Resolution Supporting Transition to Unleaded Fuel For Airplanes
HILLSBORO, OR – Hillsboro City Council unanimously approved a resolution urging the Port of Portland to shift to unleaded fuel at the Hillsboro Airport.
This week, city councilors heard from neighbors worried about how leaded jet fuel affects air quality.
Karna Sheth told councilors, “I hope that you can take in all the facts and science behind the ill effects of lead in our air.”
“There’s a reason why we don’t have lead in our fuel car,” Sheth continued.
By passing the resolution, Hillsboro urges the Port of Portland to make the fuel switch in support of the FAA’s “Eliminating Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions” initiative, to phase out all leaded gas in planes by 2030.
Advocates say banning leaded fuel at Hillsboro Airport would reduce toxic emissions.
“A group of us have been working with the Port (of Portland) for 16 years to stop selling leaded gas with no tangible results to show for our efforts until tonight,” Blaine Ackley said.
The resolution will be immediately absorbed into the city’s “Climate Action Plan” and the “Hillsboro 2035 Community Plan”.
